Best Buy and TiVo Are Forming an Alliance

New York Times, July 9, 2009 — TiVo, the Silicon Valley company that popularized the digital video recorder, and Best Buy, the national electronics chain, are forging a broad partnership.

On Thursday, the companies plan to announce that Best Buy will heavily promote TiVo products in its 1,100 stores in the United States. TiVo will develop a version of its set-top box, to be sold in Best Buy stores, that will let the retailer advertise its products and services to TiVo subscribers on their home televisions.

Holiday Inn Offers Flight Vouchers, and TiVo Tees Up Freebies, but Figuring Out What Will Resonate With Consumers Isn't Easy

Wall Street Journal, October 24, 2008 — Marketers are working overtime to overhaul their promotions, trying to snag customers who are increasingly in penny-pinching mode.

Holiday Inn recently considered the idea of offering guests a $50 credit they could use to play videogames. Instead, the hotel chain decided to attract travelers with print and online ads that offer a $99 flight voucher.

The ads, part of the "Stay Here, Fly There" campaign, began running last month.

TiVo CEO Says End Is Nigh for TV Ads

But Many in ANA Crowd Think He's Skipping Ahead

Advertising Age, October 20, 2008 — TiVo CEO Tom Rogers did everything but hang an "end is near" sign around his neck as he tried to rouse a Saturday morning breakfast crowd at the Association of National Advertisers annual conference with warnings of fast-approaching doom for conventional TV ads.

At issue is whether DVR penetration is about to reach the tipping point at which advertiser-supported TV goes the way of the music industry and newspapers — a scenario Mr. Rogers warned repeatedly is coming soon unless advertisers begin investing in TiVo-proof vehicles sold by TiVo.

YouTube Coming to TV, With TiVo the Gateway

New York Times, March 13, 2008 — Pick up the remote, turn on the television and watch YouTube.

The blurring of the television and the computer, envisioned by technology enthusiasts for years, advanced another step on Wednesday when TiVo, the popular maker of digital video recorders, announced an agreement with YouTube that will deliver millions of Web videos directly to users’ TV screens.

“TiVo’s strategy is to bridge the gap between Web video and television and make as much content available as possible for our subscribers,” said Tara Maitra, TiVo’s vice president and general manager for content services.

From 'GE Theater' To The Digital Stage

Adweek, February 12, 2007 — General Electric's history is firmly rooted in Americana, with the likes of Thomas Edison and Ronald Reagan mingling with the utility giant. Reagan hosted the TV show General Electric Theater from 1954 to 1962, a weekly half-hour program sponsored by the company that Edison founded in 1892.
